SW reel
If tapes are wound unevenly, this can cause tape edges to fold due to either tape guides or shock during tape transportation, or long-term storage can cause tapes to deform, resulting in increased errors and dropouts. Maxell discovered that the major cause of uneven tape winding is due to air generated when fast-winding (REW/FF) the VTR. Therefore, Maxell created the SW (Smooth Winding) reel (see Image 1), in which the radial grooves on the lower reel flanges are able to assist with emission of the air (see Fig. 1), and thus minimize uneven tape winding. Maxell was the first to adopt this technology on its BETACAM and BETACAM SP broadcasting tapes, which were first manufactured in 1988. Maxell has used this technology for all of its broadcasting tapes ever since.

High-precision cassette
The cassette casing is vital to the tape’s stability and protection. It must be heat-resistant, shock-resistant and have micron-order precision in order to maintain high performance. With precision-manufactured guides and rollers, Maxell tapes achieve unmatched stability.

Highly rigid protective case
Maxell uses highly rigid PP resins for all tape formats. In addition, the reel positioning rib*1 (see Image 2) inside the protective case protects the tape-storing reels from shocks that may occur during transportation.
The labyrinth structure*2 (see Image 3) is adopted for the exterior of the case to prevent dust particles from entering.

*1: Reel positioning rib is not used with D-5, D-3, S-VHS, Hi8, and DAT.
*2: Labyrinth structure is used with HDCAM, BETACAM SX, Digital BETACAM, and BETACAM SP.
