Notes on using Maxell's high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs

Package Image

Maxell's high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs conforming to the new standards for high-speed recording, are only for use with DVD-R/-RW computer drives or DVD recorders that conform to using high-speed discs. Use of these discs on some Pioneer manufactured DVD-R/-RW computer drives or DVD recorders (including OEM systems containing these products), that do not conform to using high-speed discs, may cause damage to both the loaded disc and the drive/recorder. This is due to unsupported high-speed recording firmware in the drives and recorders. A firmware update is required prior to using high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs on these particular products.

Notice:
The following information is included on the packaging of Maxell's DVD-R/-RW discs that are compatible with high-speed recording:

DVD-R discs
"1 to 4x speed" or "Ver.2.0/4x"

DVD-RW discs
"1 to 2x speed" or "Ver.1.1/2x"

High-speed DVD-R/-RW discs
In August, 2002, the DVD Forum* established new standards for high-speed recordable discs, conforming to the DVD-R 4x recording speed "DVD-R for General Version 2.0/4X-SPEED DVD-R Revision 1.0" and the DVD-RW2x recording speed "DVD-RW Version 1.1/2X-SPEED DVD-RW Revision 1.0."

*The DVD Forum is an international association of hardware manufacturers, software firms, and other users of DVDs. The association is composed of corporations or organizations engaged in activities related to DVD research, development and/or manufacturing, or any software firm or other users of DVD products interested in developing and improving the DVD Format.

For details on how to identify the products that contain particular makers' DVD-R/-RW drives or DVD recorders or how to conduct a firmware update, please contact the manufacturers of your DVD-R/-RW drives. Or you can click on this high-speed DVD-R/-RW media site: http://www.dvdhs.com/

FAQ on high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs

Q1: Why can problems occur when using high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs?
A1: An error may occur whilst operating the EJECT function if these discs are used in particular DVD-R/-RW drives or DVD recorders that do not conform to using high-speed discs. As a result damage may occur to both the loaded disc and the drive/recorder.
Q2: What is the source of this problem?
A2: It is the result of unsupported high-speed recording firmware in certain DVD-R/-RW drives and DVD recorders that do not conform to using high-speed discs.
Q3: In which drives and recorders does this problem occur? And how do I identify the equipment I am using that requires conducting a firmware update?
A3: Click on this high-speed DVD-R/-RW media link site: http://www.dvdhs.com/ or contact the manufacturer of your equipment.
Q4: How can I avoid this problem?
A4: To avoid any damage to your equipment and discs, you should conduct a firmware update prior to using any new high speed DVD-R/-RW discs. To download a firmware update, click on this link: http://www.dvdhs.com/ or contact the manufacturer of your equipment.
Q5: What shall I do if my equipment is damaged by inserting a new high-speed media for recording?
A5: Contact the manufacturer of your equipment or the retail store where you purchased your equipment.
Q6: Does the high-speed DVD-R/-RW disc itself have something to do with the problem?
A6: No, the problem is not with the high-speed media itself. It is the result of unsupported high-speed recording firmware in the DVD-R/-RW drives and DVD recorders. High-speed DVD-R/-RW discs satisfy the new standards for high-speed recordable discs established by the DVD Forum in August, 2005.
Q7: Does the same problem happen when inserting previously recorded high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs?
A7: No, it only occurs when a new high-speed disc for recording has been inserted. No pre-recorded disc can be damaged.
Q8: What about conventional DVD-R/-RW discs other than high-speed media?
A8: No problems occur with conventional DVD-R/-RW media. Again, the source of the problem is when high-speed DVD-R/-RW discs are used in particular DVD-R/-RW drives or recorders that have unsupported high-speed recording firmware.
Q9: If this problem occurs, does it have any effect on the personal computer in use?
A9: No. According to research conducted by manufacturers of these drives, it has no effect on personal computers.
Q10:  Is the problem caused by application software included with these drives?
A10: No, the source of problem is unsupported high-speed recording firmware and not application software such as data writing.
